Itoi’s Thoughts (Apr. 10, 2008)

Another interesting post from Itoi’s blog that I saved a few weeks ago. At the very end of his daily post was a short, but intriguing message.

When I do things that “I absolutely need to do” in order, things that are harder to find the time to get to slowly get pushed further and further back. It’s not that I don’t think they’re important. It’s something that I definitely want to do, it’s just that I haven’t been able to start on it yet, so… yeah.

The above paragraph is my personal message to a certain someone, but I suppose it’s also pressure for myself, and an attempt to garner sympathy from my faithful readers.

The “certain person” could of course be anyone, but as most Starmen.Net followers know, we sent Itoi a huge package of stuff a while back, and he received it about two months ago. We watched the box move around his desk every few days for a while, too. It disappeared from his desk around the time he posted this message. Included in the package was a letter from me, too, so there’s always that ever-so-slight chance he was referring to us/me, though I think that’s probably not the case. But the timing and his “excuse” and his shout out to a vague someone seemed interesting to me, so I saved the post for an update like this. I leave any assumptions to you, my faithful reader :P

In any case, I hope he found the time to look through some of the stuff all the fans made, that’s some kickass stuff we sent :D

A Message from 9 Years in the Past

I was browsing some of my really old files and came across this. July 27, 1999 was the 10th anniversary of MOTHER’s release in Japan, and fans at the biggest Japanese MOTHER fan site were celebrating. Even Shigesato Itoi himself dropped by to say a real quick something. Sadly, it looks like the site (MOTHER Nippooon) no longer exists anymore :( Anyway, here is what he said, translated into English.

Coming to this board like this may be breaking the rules in a sense, but please let me say something just this once.

Not even I, myself, was aware that July 27th was MOTHER’s birthday. I just happened to learn that this site was celebrating its anniversary, so I’ve come here with feelings of gratefulness.

MOTHER 3 is also coming along nicely now. Just like every other time, it’s taking a long time to come out. This one has quite a different “taste” than MOTHER 1 and 2, so it might not go over well with long-time fans. But I think it may be the very best one in terms of sheer excitement. But, I’m always worried, of course.

A playable version of the game is planned for an August game expo, whose name escapes me at the moment. It’s a bit of a dilemma, because a lot of time will be spent focusing on the demo and not the game. But I think it will show how things are.

I’m considering possibly releasing screenshots, sound clips, and the like little by little at some point in time on Hobonichi. I humbly ask for your patience and understanding, even if you’re not fond of how things are turning out.

I don’t have proof, but this has been Shigesato Itoi.

It’s interesting how he did wind up releasing stuff little by little 7 years later. Luckily, I think most old fans of the series liked the GBA version of 3 a lot too. I can understand why he would say that, though. It’s definitely different from the other two in many ways.

Itoi Sings (Well, Sorta)

This video isn’t really a video, it’s a 1982 Japanese song. The lyrics were written by Shigesato Itoi.

Whenever someone asks what it is he does for a living, where do you start? Writing slogans, writing lyrics to music (including techno enka music), gold mining, writing books/novels, designing video games, running his own Internet company, making music albums of his own, being a TV personality, being president of the Japan Monopoly Association (as in the board game), voicing characters in internationally-famous classic anime, being non-executive director of a pachinko/slot machine corporation, and the list keeps going. And he still does all this at 60. Damn.

Today’s Video

Today’s video is a clip from one of my favorite Japanese shows ever, Sanma’s Super Karakuri TV. Remember those “Funniest English” videos I subbed? Well, they were segments from this show. Today’s video is a different segment from the same show — in it, they bring in three old people to try to answer trivia questions the quickest.

This segment is always hilarious and I have a few of my own I want to put up on the tubes, but for now, here’s a really good one that some kind soul was awesome enough to subtitle into English. Watch it, you need to watch ittttt

Itoi’s Thoughts (Mar. 12, 2008)

Even though I don’t do the daily Itoi blog updates anymore (I wish I could, I just don’t have the time), I still check his site everyday and save any of his posts that seems especially interesting or somewhat related to his game design stuff. I’ll post this stuff every once in a while.

Right now, here is part of his entry from March 12, 2008. In it, he talks about ideas and part of his experience first proposing MOTHER 1 to Miyamoto back in the 80s.

March 12, 2008

“I have this incredible idea.” This is a line commonly said by interesting people who are just starting out. There was a time when even I, too, was like that and often thought such things. Even now, I may still have ideas that follow that line of thinking, but that isn’t where the issue lies.

Ideas are only heralded as “wonderful” after they’ve gone through the process of realization and completion. One can think, “Once realized, this will undoubtedly be wonderful!” But you can’t actually say that until it is realized. This is because “raw ideas” are filled to the brim with “reasons for not being realized”.

Yesterday, for the first time in a while, I spoke with a nice, young researcher about memories I’d already spoken about on many occasions. In particular, it was about when I first showed Mr. Miyamoto at Nintendo my written proposal for a video game. In my mind, I hoped Mr. Miyamoto, who I was meeting for the very first time, would read it and say, “Wow! This is great!” But instead, after reading it, he said in an almost natural manner, “Hmm, I see. We’d need to put this in game form first.” Now that I look back after all this time, his reply of, “We can tell for sure if this will be fun or not once it’s in game form,” seems like the only natural, logical answer possible.

No matter how wonderful a seed may be, it’s still nothing until it’s turned into a flower or fruit or what have you. You can’t say anything for sure until it’s at least started to show its bud. It could wither and die while it’s growing, after all.

Yet, even so, incredible ideas only begin with creative thinking.

The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty

After some delays writing this up, I now present to you, faithful reader, a rundown of the movie that traumatized Shigesato Itoi and served as inspiration for Giygas, the main villain and final boss in EarthBound.

If you want to jump straight to the part that he vaguely remembers, click here. Otherwise, read on and enjoy the quick summary of everything.

Also, the movie is a bit hard to obtain, so if you’re an avid EarthBound-related merchandise collector, this is probably the best place to get it.

Anyway, on with the movie!

Apparently thefts at unmanned Japanese produce stands are a big problem lately. Full story here.

Ness started a horrible trend. He should be ashamed of himself.

Info on MOTHER 4

People ask every once in a while about there possibly being a MOTHER 4, so I decided I’d put together some info here for easy reference. If you see anyone asking about it, just point them here! :D

First, there’s this video. It was from the live online chat thing Itoi held the night before MOTHER 3’s release in 2006. In it, he says that there won’t be a MOTHER 4.

However, a few months later, in a really awesome and long Nintendo Dream interview, the following exchange took place on the topic of MOTHER 3. (original text here)

————–

– So let’s make a MOTHER 4, then!

Itoi: (makes a pu sound with his mouth, then laughs) Just making MOTHER 3 was already tough enough for me!

– But when you were working on MOTHER 2, ideas for MOTHER 3 sprouted in your mind, right? So some ideas for a MOTHER 4 have certainly sprouted this time around too, right?

Itoi: I just want to be the player now. (laughs)

– But there are already tons of other games out there you can enjoy from the player’s perspective.

Itoi: What I mean is, if someone were to come up to me and say, “I’d like to make a MOTHER 4,” I might just say, “Sure, go ahead!” (laugh) Yeah, if there was a MOTHER 4, I’d really love to play it.

————–

There’s been nothing hinted at since that I’m aware of, so for now, a MOTHER 4 will remain an elusive dream for those who want more.

Remember to Dismember

After a few weeks of really busy work, I finally have time to do a review/synopsis of that movie that scarred Shigesato Itoi and served as inspiration for Giygas. I’ll probably have the full write up with plenty of pics and commentary this weekend, but for now here is THE pic that everyone’s wanting to see.
