Super Famicom Games
Monday, December 8th, 2008 | EarthBound Stuff, Games, Japan Stuff, Pictures
I was looking through some old pictures from when I lived in Japan for a short time and came across this one of my Super Famicom collection. I don’t own any of them anymore (didn’t have a job lined up right out of college
) but this pic really takes me back.
What’s neat is that this all probably cost me less than $100 total.

When I was in Japan, I had almost no extra spending money, so I had to be very frugal. Instead of getting the new fancy PlayStation 2s, I went and got a Super Famicom from a used game shop for like $20. MOTHER 2 was like $5, in the box with instructions even! Super Metroid, Mega Man X, and Street Fighter 2 were all like $2 each (if that). The Final Fantasy games were all like $10 or so, which is pricy compared to these other games, but compared to their Amercian counterparts, they were DAMN cheap.
The best deal by far was Chrono Trigger, which I picked up along with the Super Famicom. It was sitting in an ugly yellow bin in a corner, along with lots of crappy Japanese wrestling games and horseracing games. As you can see on the cartridge (if you look extra close), the price tag says 500 yen… that was like 4 dollars and some change back then! You bet your ass I picked that up without even any extra thought. In the U.S., used Chrono Trigger games sell on eBay now for $200 or more!
The store clerks made sure to tell me several times that the game probably didn’t work and that it might not save. I didn’t care. And guess what? It worked PERFECTLY. I then went home and found myself amused at seeing the differences between it and the English version, some of which you can read about here.
Anyway, I was (and still am) amazed at how the used game market is in Japan. It seems like they’re so quick to ditch things and keep moving to the next stuff. Not that I’m complaining, it saved my poor butt from dying of boredom
If you get a chance to import some old Japanese game stuff, give it a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised!
If you answered “Yes” to the poll question below, what Japanese game or games did you get?

Yes, I imported some Japanese games: MOTHER 3, and two of the Phoenix Wright games. :B
And dang I wish used games were that cheap over here.

I own MOTHER and Kirby’s Adventure for Famicom, MOTHER 2 for Super Famicom (since I could never afford the english version…), Pokémon Gold for GB, MOTHER 1+2 and 3 for GBA, Jump Super Stars and Ultimate Stars for DS, and the Ganbare Goemon game for DS. Oh and all the DDR games for PS2, can’t forget those.

Looking at that picture makes me get a little wibbly in the pit of my stomach. So… beautiful….
And yup, I’ve bought a game from Japan. Ouendan! Because Ouendan is awesome. I must find the spare cash to pick up the sequel…

I’ve got loads of used Japanese games, not that I can read any of them as I’m just a mere English speaking mortal but I own them anyway. I’ve got Tenchi Muyo RPG on the SNES, LoZ/AoL on the NES in Japanese, I’ve got some random Tenchi Muyo game for the PC that I’ve never installed, Tingle RPG and the Phantom Hourglass in Japanese as well. I think there’s probably another one floating around somewhere as well XD.

I’ve only picked up Mother 3. I did see some SFC Fire Emblem games at a used game store, one of which I tried to buy, but for some reason they told me the price but then told me they weren’t for sale.
At any rate, I don’t know Japanese, so it’s not something I do unless I have a pretty good reason for doing so.

I’ve always wanted to pick up the language and check out Japan someday, but I always figure the most interesting way to learn it is to just jump into the society and either do it or die trying.

Excellent choice of titles!
This is my collection of Japanese imports: I tried to choose exclusive releases, and I’ve been pretty happy with each one of them (well, the latest Rhythm Tengoku wasn’t as great as the original title).

I once imported both “Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan” games for the DS.
Best (and only) Japan import in my life!
And I’ll probably import the new Tatsunoko vs. Capcom at some point
But yeah, those ARE some pretty damn cheap prices for some pretty damn good games. I mean, Final Fantasy 4, 5 and 6 for 10 bucks each??
I’m from Germany and I bought the US version of FF6 FF3) for something like 30 or 40 €.
EarthBound did cost me just as much and I got FF4 (FF2) for like 20 €.
And they were all WITHOUT package, instruction manual or anything. Just the cartridge and in EarthBounds case the dust cover.
It’s amazin what western people try to get for games just because they think “extermely popular = extremely rare = extremely high price justified” which is pure and utter garbage.
Well, it’s sad that you don’t own your Super Famicom anymore. I would have bought it from you if I were able to read Japanese

It’s sad to see you don’t have them anymore.
Final Fantasy VI is such an awesome game.

I imported the second Phoenix Wright for the DS, and Dream Mix TV. Dream Mix wasn’t as fun as I hoped it would be, but it was a nice diversion.

Mato that is a great collection of super famicom games.

I just realized there’s a half of a cart at the top of the pic… but I can’t recall what game it might’ve been. It’s going to haunt me all day now!
I have tons of import games (and non-import games) that I don’t play anymore, so maybe I should give them away as prizes or sell them or something. I could probably build a small house out of them all even!
[Reply]
I’d actually never played Mega Man X until then. I remember playing a few levels of the Japanese version, but it lacked something that the original series had. I know I’m really missing out on something though, so someday I gotta sit myself down and play it. And maybe whatever sequels happen to be good.

Actually, $10 for a Chrono Trigger JP cart isn’t unusual (or at least it wasn’t when I bought it years ago).
(actually, a US cart can/could fetch more than a complete Japanese copy)
I think US versions of RPGs sell for much more because they’re in a more univerally understood language.
I got a whole slew of Japanese games.
SNES: CT, BoF1, BoF2, DQ1+2+5+6, Romancing SaGa, Heracles 3, ToP, FEDA, Magna Braban, Song Master, FEoEZ (complete for like $5), Daikaiju Monogatari (complete for like $2), Daikai 2
FC: FF3, Heracles 2, Deep Dungeon 3, Rainbow Silkroad, Devil World, Zombie Hunter, Quarth, Satomi Hakkenden, Kaiju Monogatari, Metal Max, Hoshi wo Miruhito, Megami Tensei 1 + 2
GB: Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden
GBA: Mother 1+2+3
PCE: Tengai Makyou Ziria, Emerald Dragon
PS1: Mystic Ark Phantom Playhouse (I think that’s how it translates)
Sorry but didn’t some butt-head swipe them?

Actually, Mato, in response to your comment of building houses out of the games…
I remember somebody once posted a photo of a store in Japan that used games (merchandise?) as wallpaper.

I’m not a big importer, so my list consists of 5 games:
- MOTHER 3 (My first import game, thanks to the deal your fan translation project made me aware of)
- Shin Bokura no Taiyou
- Rhythm Tengoku
- Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi
- Fire Emblem: Shin Ankoku Ryu to Hikari no Ken
Hopefully, as soon as I take Japanese in college, I’ll be able to read the text in these games… but until then, I’m playing the heck out of Rhythm Tengoku.

All of the games I’ve imported have been for the happily region-free Nintendo DS!
Rhythm Tengoku
Rhythm Tengoku Gold
Starfox Command
Children of Mana
Band Brothers
Band Brothers DX
Mother 3, Mother 1+2
Jump Superstars
Most of them I got used or on super clearance, so it was both a good deal and a way to practice reading Japanese outside of textbooks.
Some of them were so much cheaper than the English editions… and my shoddy Japanese is usually enough to get around and enjoy most of the game. Also makes a great conversation starter!

I think Mega Man X2 is supposed to be the only really good sequel, but I don’t know from personal experience.

I’ve only imported a few Japanese games. RPGs are pretty much a no-go, given all the text; I may have a few years of Japanese under my belt, but I think playing a full-fledged JRPG is at least two years away from being a possibility.
I did purchase Mother 3, however. I still pop it in now and again, as a way of checking my progress. I understand a little more every time.
Also, I’ve imported both Ouendan games (押す!闘え!応援団 and 燃えろ!熱血リズマ魂 押す!闘え!応援団2). These are, hands-down, the best games on the DS; anyone who owns the system should pick them up, along with their Western counterpart, Elite Beat Agents.
I also imported that Club Nintendo title, Exclamation Warriors (Or 絶叫戦士 サケブレイン). The concept behind the game is really pretty cool, but it’s pretty shallow; playing with friends is lots of fun, though that probably has something to do with the constant screaming of Japanese words to attack. It’s awesome, but there’s not enough. I’d love it if Nintendo funded a more expansive game based on the same idea.

Mega Man X 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all great
they suck after X4 though.
So just give them A shot.

What an interesting entry! Wish I could pick up games that cheap still.
I’m a cheapskate and hate paying ridiculous shipping, so I’m pretty sure they only imported games we own are Rune Factory 2 (which is a little bit difficult due to all the kanji… orz But I still really enjoyed it.) and the first Rozen Maiden PS2 game. Because I know that will never be in America, hahahaha. It was really easy to understand. Thank goodness for fully VA’d visual novels.
And if we don’t get them for Christmas, I’m probably gonna import MOTHER 1+2 and MOTHER 3.

I considered importing several GCN Japanese games, the Ouendan! and Stafy series, and even NiGHTS for PS2, But in the end, I only have 1 Japanese game:
GuruGuru Onsen 2 for Dreamcast
not sure why I got it, more then likely because it had Uno. I also got Dream Passport, but that’s not really a game…

Sorry for the double post, but I just remembered, I also have the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 2, which came with the Sonic 10th anniversary pack. It’s hard to remember cause the thing plays in English on a US console.

I’ve not bought anything, but I’ve been given Kirby’s Dream Land 2, some Gundam SD game for Gameboy, Pokemon Green, Tales of Phantasia PSX, and probably a few others.
Oh just remembered I had a JP Yugioh game for the GBA, have absolutely no idea which one though. Again, gift.
Up until recently though I haven’t had any money to spend, and even now I haven’t any xD. Life doesn’t cut any slack huh.

I bought Neon Genesis Evangelion: Battle Orchestra and Narutimate Accel 2. I’ve considered buying some Super Robot Taisen games, but it would be a hassle to get translated scripts. You have good taste in games!

Damn, dude. If only you had that FF4 cart still. I would’ve loved to add that to my ’shelf of games’.
I still sold CHrono Trigger though. $70, woo :O

The only Japanese game I own is a Japanese copy of Pokemon Gold I bought a year before it came out here in America. It was kinda neat exploring then-new depths, in the first sequel.
Why do you think it is Japanese games sell for so much less? American prices give me a headache, it’s like these people who love these games so much to give them a high price do not want anyone else playing them.

It’s all determined by market forces. The Japanese games are worth less to Japanese people because besides old JRPGs are plentiful there and there is low demand for them. And they’re worth less to Americans because most Americans would rather collect the North American version they remember.
For the flip side of that equation, consider how cheap old-ish sports, racing, and shooting games are America. Our market is saturated with those, and who would rather be playing Call of Duty 1 right now than Call of Duty 4?

I bought Mother 3 on the day it came out at a Tsutaya (:-D), Mother 1 + 2, Dragon Quest IV PS edition, and Dragon Quest V PS2 edition. I’ve also imported Star Ocean 1 + 2 and Chrono Trigger DS.

No. Never imported anything really, I suppose I’m just a bit too literal about not understanding it. I’d complain a bit about the fact that square enix fans are completely insane and the game are good but a bit overrated but I don’t want to start a flame war.
On the other hand I find it fascinating that people have $1,217 just to collect a old game. Probably like old comic book collectors they aren’t going to play it and keep it in mint condition for bragging right though.

I bought both of the Kingdom Hearts Final Mixes, some random DBZ/GT game, Tobal 2, Persona 4, the four Naruto fighting games for the Gamecube and one for the PS2, and most recently Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Oh, and MOTHER 3, of course! ;D

I’ve bought MOTHER 3 and Pokemon Diamond (I couldn’t stand the wait any longer =D .
I imported MOTHER 3, but I picked up Pokemon Diamond while I was in Japan during my stay as an exchange student.
The only thing I really remember from Japanese used games stores are the games are cheap and discs are always in good condition. To my recollection, I had to look hard to find discs that were REALLY scratched. Now compare that to our USA used game stores…

I just got mother 2 in the mail. But you know that already because you posted it on Earthbound Central xD
