It really depends on what the objective is. Ifg you objective is simply to make an enjoyable, english version of the game with a good story, then people like Ted Woolsey and the Working Designs staff succeed with flying colors. However I would separate that from translation and call it a localization project instead. When I hear "translation" I expect a quality, accurate conversion of the original text from one language into another. That's where my only gripes lie. If they would just sell their english edition and call it the "american release" or "localized release" etc, I'd give them a standing ovation. Packaging such works as a translation however severely grates on my mind.
