That actually was more an example of a piss poor translation than of censorship. The verb "to defeat" (倒す) literally means "To knock over" and the intransitive form of the verb "to be defeated" (倒れる) literally means "to be knocked over, to fall down. It's also the same verb that's used when someone collapses to the ground in exhaustion, etc. So the hard literal meaning of "X was defeated" is "X was knocked down/X fell down."
