The verb "to defeat" (倒す) literally means "To knock over" and the intransitive form of the verb "to be defeated" (倒れる) literally means "to be knocked over, to fall down. It's also the same verb that's used when someone collapses to the ground in exhaustion, etc. So the hard literal meaning of "X was defeated" is "X was knocked down/X fell down."
Well, technically, it's the same thing in English, just that it's pretty archaic. ^^
Though, I still hear about felling trees. :P
